Horizontal Search Engine Builder

Bucaplus framework allows creating search services either horizontal or vertical. This post talks about the horizontal posibilities for general searches. The search designr must focus on deliver value with respect to major horizontal search engines like Google, Bing or Yahoo.

Word Location Relevance

A good design with respect to word location must be delivered. Title words are a key part, but a balance must be found with respect to words in title, body, body bolded, body headers, META tags and Url. You can modify the weights and build the search service in the test mode and see the results.

Resources Properties Relevance

Here you can define the relevance for date (latest content first), content type, link relevance and text links (words found in links). These properties will define your horizontal search service pretty good. Lately when using Bing, I realized that main differences between Bing and Google are similar to modifying those properties mentioned. The text links module is still in experimental status and could evolve during the beta with new releases, new algorithms and improvements.

Link Relevance

Here you can use the default link relevance offered by Buscaplus or define your own link relevance submitting a link mapping of your own for domains, hosts or Urls.

You can also define the general properties of the link relevance system. You can define relevance for content types (for example, Blogs), alter the relevance mapping (making only highest relevant link resources matter) or alter the link spamming mapping.

Among the vertical properties these can be modified for horizontal search: the knowledge level and use categories. You can make most relevance content for beginners, and for general uses like obtain information.

Presentation

You can choose from a standard presentation like in most search engines or go with a visual one like SearchMe, integrate images in results, integrate more content into the results, plugins, etc…

How Vertical You Want Your Search Engine To Be?

In 2007 we saw the vertical search game play with entries like Rollyo and others that created that Google introduced their service Custom Search and Yahoo Search Builder. Those services allows you to set a list of Urls or domains to focus your searches and integrate into your site.

But Buscaplus allows you even more. You can define all the variables that search engines like Google, Microsoft or Yahoo use to optimize for their private tests to personalize your perfect search service. From relevance depending on word location, to relevance of links, words inside anchors, type of resources, etc…

Sites

Here in Buscaplus we offer this kind of services. We call them “Sites” and offer “Sites” and “Sites Plus”. The Sites plus allows 2,000 urls or domains. The difference is that we offer the possibility to modify all the variables that affect relevance in a search engine, giving users much more power to personalize.

Topics

This service allows for a list of tags or keywords to create a search upon. Instead of sites, this one will search the web for the topics you enter. Also allows defining the search variables that affect ranking and relevance. I set up a search account with the tags from my blog to search for those in the net.

Internet Search

But probably the most revolutionary thing is to define a search account for the web (not sites or topics limited) and adapt the configuration for our vertical purposes. Our vertical services can be totally vertical, oblique or very much horizontal. You decide on how vertical to define things in Buscaplus.

Internet users when searching have a set of preferences. This preferences go from keywords entered shown in the title of search results, images integration, results related to the query entered, etc… When Bing appeared a few weeks ago I read on blogs that some people liked it (giving reasons), others did not like it (their reasons too) and other even loving it. All those users had search preferences that were not met (or were met) by this new search engine. What we want to introduce is that the Internet community defines these preferences so user may use search account A or search account B depending on those preferences.

A New Technology Player In The Search Industry

Buscaplus is not a search engine. Buscaplus is a framework to create and optimize search engines in the net. These search engines are called search services. Users may configure their own search service, decide on ranking and optimize it for their friends, their communities, their groups or for everybody. This targetted behavior is what we call horizontal or vertical search services. Services that are targetted at some sector or user preferences are very vertical, meanwhile services for everybody are called horizontal search services.

Internet Your Way

In Buscaplus you have the freedom of deciding on search result ranking. You do this not by manually moving up and down a result, but by defining a set of variables that directly affect ranking.  These variables can be defined directly (takes some time) or through what we call search patterns. You only need to select a pattern of what you want in a search engine and no need to mesh with Xml files of configuration.

We are also thinking for Summer release in September to allow to add patterns to a list, like a shopping cart. This way you don’t have to define a pattern but a list of things you like in a search service. In the background we would have a system that would work out the configurations to make that thing work.

Users Are More Than One

See, traditional search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing treat you as an average user. They optimize for that “imaginary” user that represents you. They spend big money on doing tests of usuability for real people to come up with something that satisfies most users.

Buscaplus offers another approach. We provide a search framework that allows search account creation free. The Internet community can create the search accounts they like, the market will drive the search creation activity. In fact, the Internet community now has a tool to allow groups of people to define search services that go beyond just 10 results for everybody.

I believe there is more than 10 good results when you search for any keyword. Depending on the search accounts you are using, the results will be different.

Current Status

Buscaplus currently only has content in spanish, around 4 million web pages in spanish. We hope to go for more content and english index too, depending on how successfull we are in seeking financing or getting key partners that will allow to deploy a good infrastructure for the search system.

We get very well represented by this cool video

I think disruptive projects are 100% represented by this video. The thing is that a disruptive project could be so disruptive that nobody will ever follow the crazy guy dancing, not right time, nor enough patience or perseverance, etc… So disruptive could end up in nobody following the dancing guy and people will surely believe that guy is crazy and not a visionary. That line I think is so dim that is hard to tell when you are at one side or the opposite side. At least is how I feel many times explaining my project to people.

Introduction To Buscaplus

This presentation shows what Buscaplus is and how works the framework. Buscaplus is not a search engine. Its design has many search accounts that are optimized by Internet users which lead to a set of search services, either horizontal or vertical ones.

Groups of people or individuals can create search accounts free and they have the freedom to determine which results should be in the top 10, modifying a set of variables in the configuration of their search account.
