Bucaplus framework allows creating search services either horizontal or vertical. This post talks about the horizontal posibilities for general searches. The search designr must focus on deliver value with respect to major horizontal search engines like Google, Bing or Yahoo.
Word Location Relevance
A good design with respect to word location must be delivered. Title words are a key part, but a balance must be found with respect to words in title, body, body bolded, body headers, META tags and Url. You can modify the weights and build the search service in the test mode and see the results.
Resources Properties Relevance
Here you can define the relevance for date (latest content first), content type, link relevance and text links (words found in links). These properties will define your horizontal search service pretty good. Lately when using Bing, I realized that main differences between Bing and Google are similar to modifying those properties mentioned. The text links module is still in experimental status and could evolve during the beta with new releases, new algorithms and improvements.
Link Relevance
Here you can use the default link relevance offered by Buscaplus or define your own link relevance submitting a link mapping of your own for domains, hosts or Urls.
You can also define the general properties of the link relevance system. You can define relevance for content types (for example, Blogs), alter the relevance mapping (making only highest relevant link resources matter) or alter the link spamming mapping.
Among the vertical properties these can be modified for horizontal search: the knowledge level and use categories. You can make most relevance content for beginners, and for general uses like obtain information.
Presentation
You can choose from a standard presentation like in most search engines or go with a visual one like SearchMe, integrate images in results, integrate more content into the results, plugins, etc…
